The 180,000 carat Bahia Emerald was originaly found in a Brazilian Mine in July, 2001. The giant gemstone, estimated to be worth up to 370 million dollars, was reportedly carried by man and mule on an 11 month, 700 mile, journey through the jungle. From there it was appraised and shipped to the United States. In 2008 the World's Second Largest Emerald went missing. It was then traced to a warehouse in Las Vegas, where investigators said that falsified papers had been used to steal the stone. When the buyer, seller, and selling company all claimed ownership to the stone, a federal judge ordered the Sherrif's Dept. to hold the stone until the true owner could be identified. As of May 2009, at least 2 more people have claimed ownership and the giant emerald is still in police custody. (See the CNN News Release)
