The Human body is about 18% Carbon, the 4th most abundant element is nature. Surely you knew this, but did you know that there are actually 4 different "allotropes" (or structural variations) of carbon? It's truely amazing how the structure and alignment of an atoms can result in a completely unique form of the same element. Carbon, for example has 3 naturally occurring allotropes and a 4th synthesized one: amorphous, graphite, diamond, and "white carbon." Amorphous carbon is used in the production of ink, paint, rubber, and batteries. Graphite is the real "Lead" in our pencils. And incredibly, Diamonds are also a form of Carbon that is highly compressed. It's hard to believe that graphite, one of the softest known substances, is exactly the same as diamond, one of the hardest known substances, except for it's crystalline structure.
