Scientists have long believed that the Earth's Oceans have remain very much the same for eons. Recent evidence from the ocean's salt crystals has supported a different theory however. Scientists studying ancient water droplets that are trapped in salt crystals have revealed reason to believe that the chemical composition of the Earth's oceans has actually changed substantially over the past 500 million years or so. Their findings came from largely from studying hot brine springs from the mid-Atlantic and from oceanographers' discovery that "heat from lava was creating convection cells that drove seawater into cracks and crevices in the sea floor and out again at the brine springs. The seawater’s trip beneath the ocean floor took out magnesium and sulfate and added calcium and potassium." This helps explain the giant deposits of chalk found around the globe. (Learn More)
